John’s gospel includes some of the best known and most evocative passages in the Bible. It represents a literary tradition distinct from Matthew, Mark and Luke, and contains unique theological emphases.
The Church year which begins at Advent 2026 will source most of its Sunday gospel readings from St Mark – but also has many excerpts from St John. This evening is an opportunity to get ahead of the lectionary by immersing ourselves in the ideas and values of the fourth evangelist.
Some of the most famous stories and sayings of Jesus are only found in the fourth gospel: the wedding at Cana; the Samaritan at the well; the seven ‘I am’ sayings; the raising of Lazarus; the washing of the disciples’ feet; the resurrection encounters of Mary Magdalene and ‘doubting’ Thomas. This evening will explore their original significance and enduring message.
