Conserving our Cloisters

A major project is underway to restore the beautiful Cloisters of Salisbury Cathedral.

The Conservation Project

Our Works Department has begun a major restoration project to the North Cloisters that is expected to take up to five years to complete. The project will restore the Cloister’s elaborately carved tracery and Purbeck columns, which are in urgent need of repair.

Our stonemasons will make their way along the Cloisters, conserving and replacing stones as necessary. We have put up interpretation panels where the work is taking place, to shine a light on our talented stonemasons and explain more about the project.

The Cathedral’s Works Department

Salisbury is one of only 10 cathedrals to have an in-house team of skilled stonemasons who still use original medieval carving techniques. We are fortunate to have a team of incredibly skilled craftspeople, who work to maintain our cathedral so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

The North Cloisters

The North Cloisters contain some of the most elaborately carved stones on the Cathedral and are crafted from local Purbeck and Chilmark stone.

Repairing and replacing stones in this area will ensure that the beauty and integrity of the building are preserved.

How you can support the project

We are offering the exciting opportunity to sponsor a stone in the North Cloister. By sponsoring a part of this treasured building, you will be helping to preserve and protect our precious heritage.

Every stone sponsorship receives up to four characters carved on your stone, a photograph of your stone showing the carving, its location, and your name in the ledger in our fabric archives. Thank you for your support.
