Salisbury Cathedral recognised as ‘excellent’ by VisitEngland

Salisbury Cathedral has once again been recognised for its outstanding visitor experience, achieving an impressive 92% score in the 2025 VisitEngland assessment — a 4% increase on last year’s result. The VisitEngland Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme assesses a wide range of tourism experiences across England, with trained assessors reviewing the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of each attraction’s offer.

The VisitEngland assessor praised the Cathedral’s ‘excellent culture of welcome’ and the exceptional guided tours and demonstrations.

Reflecting on the achievement, Jane Morgan, Salisbury Cathedral’s Director of External Relations and Visitor Experience, said: “We are absolutely delighted with this result, which is a testament to the hard work and passion of our team. It shows our commitment to offering an outstanding experience for every visitor who walks through our doors.”

This excellent performance has cemented the Cathedral’s reputation as a leading visitor attraction and triggered nominations for both the prestigious Gold Accolade and the Best Told Story award.

Salisbury Cathedral has already proven its storytelling excellence, having won the Best Told Story award in 2022 following a major revamp of the Cathedral’s interpretation. The interpretation project focused on the main Cathedral Floor experience, ensuring the Cathedral and Christian stories were shared engagingly and inclusively. New objects and archive materials were introduced, and new signage, including videos accessed by QR codes, was commissioned.

Since then, the Cathedral has taken further steps to improve its visitor offer. Earlier this year, the enclosure for Magna Carta was revamped, giving visitors an improved experience of seeing this precious ancient document and providing better protection for Magna Carta from ambient light exposure.

The Refectory restaurant has also undergone a major refurbishment this year, with a brand-new glass roof fitted, showcasing a spectacular view of the spire. The Refectory also benefited from improvements to the layout and flooring.
