Holy Week begins with the Palm Sunday Eucharist, when we recall our Lord’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
The Cathedral Choir sings the ancient and dramatic Office of Tenebrae in an imaginative processional service drawing on the Sarum tradition.
During this service the Bishop blesses oil which will be used in the course of the year by the clergy of the diocese as they minister to the sick or prepare their people for Christian discipleship.
Jesus’ commitment to love, service and forgiveness, even in the face of cruel opposition and gathering darkness, is the theme of the Maundy Thursday services.
The Liturgy of Good Friday includes an account of the Passion sung to Plainsong, the Veneration of the Cross and the Prayers of Intercession.
The nave is prepared as an oratory for silent prayer, and visitors on that day will be invited to spend a few moments of quiet reflection.
The Easter vigil readings are read in the Chapter House interspersed with plainsong psalmody.
As the vigil concludes, we move outside where, with the ‘sun arising in the East’, we kindle the Easter fire, from which the Paschal candle is lit.
