Stanford Festival Organ Concert

Dates

An organ concert celebrating the music of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford

Join us for a special Organ Concert, played by John Challenger on the Cathedral’s famous Father Willis organ.
The programme features not only Stanford’s own organ music, but organ works by the composers who influenced him (the Schumanns, and Brahms) and some of the composers he taught (Coleridge-Taylor, Holst, Howells, and Vaughan Williams).
Salisbury’s organ, completed by Henry Willis in 1877, is an English romantic masterpiece, and ideally suited to this nineteenth- and twentieth-century music. The concert, which includes both well-known and less-familiar organ works, will end with Stanford’s most accomplished organ composition, the dramatic and virtuosic Fantasia and Toccata (Opus 57).
The big screen offers the audience a backstage view into the organ loft, allowing them to observe John as he puts the Cathedral’s magnificent organ through its paces while they listen.
This event is part of our Stanford Festival, a week-long celebration of the music and legacy of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford.
