What’s on for families – Advent and Christmas 2026

What’s on for Families

Make special family memories at Salisbury Cathedral this Advent and Christmas.

From festive trails and creative craft activities to storytelling, music, film screenings and family-friendly worship, there’s plenty for children of all ages to enjoy throughout the season.

Our Nativity Prayers display invites visitors to become part of a special community artwork. Every figure in the Nativity scene has been created by a member of our community and carries a prayer or message. During your visit, children and adults can decorate and add their own wooden figure and contribute to this beautiful display. All the figures will be blessed at a service on Candlemas. Available throughout the Advent and Christmas season during Cathedral opening hours.

From 5 December until 2 February, families can take part in the Angels Activity Trail. Pick up a trail sheet and explore the Cathedral in search of hidden angels. Can you find them all? The trail is free with admission and available during visiting hours.

On Thursday 10 December, join us for our free Festive Late Night Opening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. As well as festive music performances throughout the evening, children can enjoy a free silent mini disco, dress up in mini copes, decorate an Advent candle to take home, and discover parts of the Cathedral not usually open to visitors. It’s the perfect festive family outing.

Get creative at Christmas Crafts on Saturday 12 December, 10am to 1pm. Children can make Christmas cards, wearable angel wings and button decorations for the tree, before gathering beneath the Christmas tree for angel-themed storytelling. Don’t forget to complete the Angels Activity Trail while you’re here.

Music lovers can enjoy a festive performance from the Youth Choir on Saturday 12 December at 12.15pm, featuring seasonal favourites in the stunning surroundings of the Cathedral.

Later that evening, settle in for a screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol (U) on Saturday 12 December at 7pm. Watch this festive family favourite on the big screen surrounded by beautiful Christmas decorations, with popcorn, hot chocolate and other seasonal treats available.

Little ones are especially welcome at Christmas Crafts for Pre-schoolers on Monday 14 December from 10am to 12pm. Pre-school children can create their own angel wings and enjoy a special angel-themed storytelling session beneath the Cathedral’s Christmas tree at 11.30am.

Families can return on Monday 21 December from 10am to 2.30pm for Christmas Crafts for All Ages. Make Christmas cards and angel decorations, enjoy storytelling sessions at 11.30am and 2pm, and see if you can spot every angel on our popular activity trail before collecting your sticker.

On Christmas Eve, join us for A Family Crib Service for Christmas Eve at 1pm or 2.45pm. Especially suitable for younger children, this joyful service retells the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem through music, storytelling and traditional Christmas carols with a modern twist. Featuring music from the Salisbury Cathedral Junior and Youth Choirs alongside the junior choristers of Salisbury Cathedral Choir, it’s a wonderful way for families to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas together. No booking is required and doors open 30 minutes before each service.
