Literary and Film links
Salisbury Cathedral, its Close and the city are familiar to many of our visitors from a number of well-known novels. Indeed, reading these novels – or watching a film or TV adaptation - has been the inspiration for many visits here.
In some Salisbury is explicit – as in The Spire written by William Golding, Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd and Ghost Knight by Cornelia Funke. In Ken Follett's two novelsThe Pillars of the Earth and its sequel World Without End and Anthony Trollope's Barchester Chronicles, Salisbury and the Cathedral are the inspiration for the fictional town, city and Cathedral at the heart of the novel.
Thomas Hardy's Melchester and Melchester Cathedral in his final novel Jude the Obscure are known to be Salisbury and Salisbury Cathedral.
