Update about changes to our regular pattern of Worship

Update about changes to our regular pattern of Worship

From Monday 19 July, the government lifted most Covid-19 restrictions and, having carefully reviewed recent Church of England guidance, our service pattern will change to the following from Monday 26 July:

07:30                     Morning Prayer, Trinity Chapel (08:30 on Saturdays)

07:50                     Holy Communion, Trinity Chapel (08:50 on Saturdays)

12:00                     Holy Communion (Tuesday and Thursday only)

17:30                     Evening Prayer (BCP), Trinity Chapel

08:00                     Holy Communion (CW Order Two), Trinity Chapel

                09:15                     Morning Prayer (BCP)

                11:00                     The Eucharist with hymns

16:30                     Evening Prayer (BCP), Trinity Chapel

The 11:00 Eucharist on Sunday mornings will continue to be livestreamed during August and when the choir return on 5 September, we will return to the previous pattern of livestreaming Tuesday and Thursday Evensongs as well as both the Sunday Eucharist and Evensong. We will end both the midday Zoom Prayer and Daily Reflection series on Friday 30 July.

At the Cathedral, we are taking an incremental approach to changes, as we know that Covid-19 rates are on the increase both nationally and locally.  We also know that concerns remain about crowded areas, and therefore we will continue to put some measures in place to mitigate the risks of Covid-19, as well as encouraging worshippers to take personal responsibility for their own safety.  As part of this, please note the following points in relation to services:

  • We strongly encourage worshippers to continue to wear a face mask as one of the principal ways in which we can protect ourselves and others.   Face masks may be removed when in your seat, but we strongly encourage you to wear them when walking around in the Cathedral, for example to receive communion.
  • From Monday 26 July, worshippers will no longer be required to pre-book their place at a service.  A QR code will be available for worshippers to scan in using the NHS Covid-19 app on arrival at a service, should you wish, or details may be left with a verger or steward.
  • Social distancing in the seating in the nave will be reduced (though not eliminated), with seating in rows of 6.  The transepts will continue as before with seating at 2m distance, for those who prefer.  We strongly encourage worshippers in these areas to wear face masks, even when seated.
  • Some congregational hymn singing will be reintroduced.  Please sit in the nave if you wish to join in.
  • At this stage, we ask worshippers to continue not to shake hands or make physical contact when exchanging the Peace.  Please greet those sitting in the area around you rather than moving from your seat.
  • Communion will now be administered at standing stations in the nave, whilst still being brought to communicants at their seats in the transepts.   Communion will be in one kind only, ie only the bread of Holy Communion.
  • Worshippers are asked to remain seated at the end of the service until invited by the stewards to move, in order that all can exit safely.

Please note that, in view of the current context, we will review these arrangements no later than the end of August.
