Videos

Vlogmas Day Twelve: Christmas means to me

In our final film, we find out what Christmas means to our wonderful guides, dedicated staff and others who live within the Close community. There’s a common theme of love, happiness, family and friends, of celebration, joy and lots of treats. Music credits: Written by Michael Perry. Midi arrangement by CN Productions. Copyright 1965 Michael Perry - The Jubilate Group

Vlogmas Day Eleven: Three Kings and a donkey

As we watch our giant nativity scene being retrieved and installed (in some cases by cherry picker) in our Spire Crossing, we learn about a little more about our ‘scary’ angels from Canon Treasurer Robert Titley. ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung by our Girls Choir.

Vlogmas Day Ten: Christmas in the past

Today we visit Emily Naish in our archives to get a taste of what a Cathedral Christmas might have been like in years gone by. She shows Amber a variety of documents from old photographs and postcards to Christmas music schedules. The Boys Choir sing ‘Hark the Herald Angels sing’.

Vlogmas Day Nine: Angels and Nativity

As we watch our giant nativity scene being retrieved and installed (in some cases by cherry picker) in our Spire Crossing, we learn about a little more about our ‘scary’ angels from Canon Treasurer Robert Titley. ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung by our Girls Choir.

Day Eight: Cathedral sings Slade

oday we present a sing song by our ‘talented’ teams filmed in a variety of offices, workshops and different areas of the Cathedral… along with the odd retake! Music: Merry Christmas by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea/licensed by Barn Publishing (Slade) Ltd. Sung by volunteer Floor guides, volunteer Tower guides, Shop and Front desk staff, Wyndham House staff and Works department.

Vlogmas Day Seven: A kid's Christmas

Our Education team need a hand putting up the stage for their special puppet show so Amber helps out – it’s not as straight forward as you’d think though! Thankfully they soon work it out and put on a brilliant performance for the children who have come for the show.

Vlogmas Day Six: Canine Capers

Today’s stars are Monty and Jasper who explore the Cathedral on their own while their friends Charlie, Hector, Ruby and Alfie join a free tour with knowledgeable volunteer guide Roxy. The dogs learn a little history while they enjoy a fun day out in the most dog friendly venue in the South West!

Vlogmas Day Five: Christmas Traditions

Today Amber visits the Refectory for a traditional stir up then takes time out to taste the Refectory's 'Christmas dinner with a twist'.

Vlogmas day Four: Chasubles, candles and copes

Today Amber visits the Vestry team to learn more about their preparations for the Advent season - from setting up huge candlabras to getting robes ready for services – and the meaning behind some of the colours used.

Day Three: A very tall tale...

Today Gary & Richard go to Longleat to fell our giant ChristmasTree - timbeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! Then of course we have to put it up and decorate it...

Day Two: A Token of Love

Today Amber joins our talented team of volunteer flower arrangers as they create a special installation in our cloisters using over 100 foam blocks, twisted hazel, silver birch, fresh cut flowers and stars. Inspired by Christina Rossetti’s poem ‘Love Came Down at Christmas’, A Token of Love offers visitors the opportunity to remember and reflect on those we miss the most at this time of year, amongst lights and decorations of Christmas and winter.

Day One: Christmas from on high!

Today Amber visits the Christmas Market, tries the hottest chilli in town and takes a trip up the Tower to see the lights. Anyone spot the peregrine? #12daystochristmas
