Cathedral Clerk of Works takes up the baton in 2000-mile cycle challenge

Yesterday (Sunday 20 June) Gary Price, Clerk of the Works at Salisbury Cathedral, met up with cyclists from Winchester to take up the baton in the latest leg of the Cathedrals “Cycle With Purpose” relay, which links all 42 of England’s Anglican cathedrals.

The cycling event, designed to publicise the new Cathedrals’ Cycle Route, started in Newcastle on Sunday 30 May and finishes back there on Saturday 10 July – 2000 miles, one baton, 42 cathedrals and 42 days later.

Gary starts his 100-mile leg of the route today (Monday 21 June), riding from Salisbury Cathedral to Exeter Cathedral with his two sons, 20-year-old Harry and seventeen-year-old Archie, plus his future son-in-law Jake Williams. Their epic two-day journey will mark the halfway point in the relay, with another 1000m to be covered before the relay returns to Newcastle.

Gary Price Clerk of Works said:
“I’m currently wishing I worked at St Paul’s and only had to ride the mile to Southwark Cathedral! The Salisbury-Exeter leg is one of the longest, and I reckon we will add a fair few miles on because we are bound to get lost. At least we are not tackling Truro to Wells, which is 50 miles longer, and I have the boys to keep me going!”

Gary has already raised over £1000 in sponsorship, which will go to Wiltshire Mind. He chose the charity because of impact the pandemic has had on mental health, and to promote cycling for wellbeing.

Gary Price, Clerk of the Works said:

“I think the events of the last 18 months have really showed how much mental and physical health are all part of the same picture and how much the one influences the other. My two sons and I have really benefited from cycling, and I’m sure many others felt the same about being able to get out exercising during the lockdowns – whether just walking, cycling or running.”

If you wish to sponsor Gary’s ride, there’s a link to his Just Giving page here.

Details of the cycle route can be found here, so if Gary’s marathon has inspired you, you are welcome to recreate all or part of the route yourself.

Each cathedral will have stickers available as momentoes of your journey, whether you complete it all or just one of the stages.
