Our Vision and Ambitions

Salisbury Cathedral is a living church and a testimony to the faith and skills of the medieval craftsmen who built it. We take the responsibility of caring for the future of this incredible place very seriously.

Governance

Salisbury Cathedral is regulated by the Charity Commission (Charity Number 1202770). The governance of the Cathedral is regulated by the Cathedrals Measure 2021.

The corporate body of Salisbury Cathedral is the Chapter, a body comprising four Executive members (the Dean and the three Residentiary Canons) and up to eight Non-Executive members (two-thirds of whom must be lay people).

Non-Executive members of Chapter are appointed by the other members of the Chapter. The Bishop of Salisbury appoints one Non-Executive member to serve as the Senior Non-Executive member.

The Chapter’s Annual Report sets out in detail the rich and varied nature of the life and work of this Cathedral Church and is available to download below.

Our Teams

The Chapter is supported by the Cathedral Executive Team. The Dean and the three Residentiary Canons are members of the team and work with the Chapter Clerk (Chief Operating Officer) and Directors who have responsibility for each functional area: Liturgy and Music, Visitor Services and External Relations, Finance, Human Resources, and Community Engagement. Between them they lead approximately 90 people in fifteen teams and across the site.

We are also incredibly fortunate to have over 500 volunteers who generously give up their time and energy to help the Cathedral in a wide variety of ways, from mending vestments and polishing silver to taking tower tours and impersonating King John for school groups.
