THE MONTH OF JUNE

Rev Maggie Guillebaud, Cathedral Curate (Sunday 1st June 2008)

'June is bustin out all over', as the bouncy and tuneful lyrics have it in Rodgers' and Hammerstein's Carousel, and there is an air of celebration this month too here at the Cathedral as we celebrate the 750th anniversary of our foundation.

May saw the highly successful Cathedral Open Day on the 26th, with we estimate well over four thousand people enjoying seeing parts of the Cathedral not usually open to visitors, such as the Library and Vestry, as well as many other attractions in the Close. Our Patronal Festival on the following day rounded off an amazing weekend.

This month we welcome Archbishop Desmond Tutu both to the Cathedral and to the Salisbury International Arts Festival, where the Rainbow Choir from Soweto will be one of the star attractions at their concert in the Cathedral. Archbishop Tutu will be made an honorary Canon of the Cathedral in recognition of his outstanding work for peace and reconciliation throughout the world. It will be a time of rejoicing and fellowship with Christians from the other side of the world.

As we reflect on the history of this beautiful place, how fitting it is that the original vision of a great and mighty Cathedral, dedicated to the glory of God, rising up from the water meadows of a small provincial town, should over the centuries of continual proclamation of the Gospel have become a place where the love of God and of his risen Son enables us to join hands with peoples from all over the globe. As the many thousands of visitors from many countries which we welcome through our doors each year will attest, this is still a house of living prayer and hope, the hope which inspired our forebears all those years ago to begin on the mighty enterprise of building this church. This month we look back with gratitude to all who have kept the spirit of God alive in this place, and look forward to the next 750 years with hopeful anticipation that this work will continue.
