New faces in the choir and promotions for seniors

Posted By : Marie Thomas Tuesday 7th February 2017

Three boy choristers were promoted to senior positions on Sunday 5 February ahead of a major fundraising concert and this year’s choir tour to the USA.

Luke Lane from Fyfield, Andover becomes Bishop’s Chorister, the most senior boy chorister, while Tom Carter becomes Vestry Monitor and George Oakenfold has been appointed Turner.

All three boys will be travelling to America on 15 March as part of a 32 strong choral group. They will be singing at Stanford University, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and other venues and churches in the San Francisco Bay area.

Two probationers were also admitted as full choristers at the same Evensong. Sebastian Hamlyn and Sebastian Kunzer were ‘bumped up’ in a time honoured rite that is peculiar to the Cathedral and involves having your head bumped on a special stone in the South Presbytery Aisle, whilst your fellow choristers chant a welcome.

The new choristers won’t be travelling to America but they will be take part in a concert given by the full choir prior to the tour. The Choral Foundation ‘Pre-Tour’ Concert, which traditionally showcases some of the music that features on the tour, takes place at 15.00 on Sunday, 26 February in the Cathedral
