Cathedral Open day and Magna Carta Community Pageant

Posted By : Roz Mitchell Monday 15th June 2015

800 years ago today Magna Carta was sealed by King John and we have been celebrating by holding an Open Day which lasts until 22.00 tonight!

Come and see our costumed interpreters bringing historical characters to life or try a west window tour from16.30 onwards. Explore some of the 'hidden places' in the Cathedral such our Library, Vestry and Song Room or admire the intricate embroidery in our Vestments display.
Make sure you visit our new interactive Magna Carta exhibition in the Cloisters and Chapter House. Test the weight of a sword, try on a medieval gauntlet, interact with our multimedia displays and have your own say about what’s important to you!
There's also a treasure hunt ‘Otto - the Little Lost Scribe' for the children and our two fantastic new light installations, ‘Enlightenment’ in the North Porch and ‘Power of Words’ in the Morning Chapel
We even have a BBQ available from 18.00 on the North Lawn while we wait for the arrival of a parade of gigantic Baron puppets in the Magna Carta Community Pageant which will finish with a spectacular pyrotechnic finale on the West Lawn!  Approximate timings for the evening from there on are a follows:
20.00 Military Wives Choir sing at the West Front
20.40 Magna Carta Community Pageant arrives in the Close
21.30 Pyrotechnic finale
21.50 Address by the Dean and Jane Scott (Wiltshire Council)
22.00 Closing prayer in the Cathedral

We do hope that you will join us for part or all of these special celebrations - we’d love to see you!
