NEW SARUM CANON ADMITTED AT SALISBURY CATHEDRAL

Bishop Christian Nourrichard, the Bishop of Evreux in Normandy, France, was admitted as a Sarum Canon at Salisbury Cathedral by the Bishop of Salisbury, The Rt Revd Dr David Stancliffe, at a Festal Evensong on Tuesday 13 October.

Speaking after the service, Bishop David said “The Diocese of Salisbury has been twinned with the Diocese of Evreux since 1987. The purpose of the link is to improve mutual understanding between the Roman Catholic Church in France and the Church of England, and to share the common ground that exists between our two churches. It provides opportunities for parishes and individuals in our Diocese to link with those in Evreux, including yearly diocesan visits to study various issues so that we can learn from each other. I am keen that we learn from Evreux's imaginative solutions to the problem of having only a quarter as many clergy as we do to minister to an area the same size. In particular, their use of lay people in positions of responsibility and leadership is a pattern I would like us to explore.

“The current Bishop's predecessor was made a Sarum Canon in 2001 as a mark of the importance attached to this link for what it can teach us. Making Bishop Christian Nourrichard a Sarum Canon also demonstrates our continuing commitment to this important exchange of ideas and prayerful support. His acceptance shows our commitment is reciprocated by him and those in his care.”
