Issued Tuesday 28th May 2002

Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex will be attending the Wiltshire County Golden Jubilee service at Salisbury Cathedral on Sunday 2nd June 2002.

On Sunday 2nd June, representatives from organisations throughout Wiltshire have been invited by the Lord Lieutenant, Lieutenant-General Sir Maurice Johnston to meet in Salisbury Cathedral to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Accession. The Queen will be represented by Their Royal Highnesses, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, who are spending the day in South Wiltshire.

The service, attended by some 1600 specially invited guests, together with members of the Cathedral's regular congregation, will take place at 3pm on Sunday 2nd June 2002. Admission will be by ticket only, with the service being relayed live in sound externally to the West Front of the Cathedral for people visiting the Close that day.

Lieutenant-General Sir Maurice Johnston said, "We wanted to bring together a congregation representative of the many aspects of life across this immensely varied, historic and rural County of Wiltshire. The response has been tremendous, and I know that this service will be a memorable occasion for all. I am particularly delighted that we have received acceptances from every single parish throughout Wiltshire."

The colour party procession will include the Royal Gloucestershire Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment, Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry, Royal Air Force Lynham, Royal British Legion, St John Ambulance, Wiltshire Scouts and Guides.

Amongst other dignitaries attending the service will be the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire (Lieutenant-General Sir Maurice Johnston), the High Sheriff (Sir Christopher Benson), the Bishops of Salisbury, Ramsbury and Swindon, Mayors from across the County and the Chief Constable of Wiltshire.

The sermon will be given by the Dean of Salisbury (the Very Revd Derek Watson), with readings by HRH The Earl of Wessex and the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire.
