NEW CANON TREASURER APPOINTED AT CATHEDRAL

The Revd Mark Bonney to be Treasurer

The Revd Mark Bonney has been appointed by the Bishop as the new Canon Treasurer at Salisbury Cathedral to fill the post left vacant when Canon June Osborne was installed as Dean of Salisbury.

The Bishop of Salisbury, The Right Revd David Stancliffe, has announced the appointment of The Revd Mark Bonney as the next Canon Treasurer at Salisbury Cathedral. This ancient title is one of the three residentiary canons (Precentor, Chancellor and Treasurer) who, along with the Dean and Chapter Clerk make up the Executive, responsible to the Chapter for the day to day governance of the Cathedral. The post was made vacant when its previous holder, Canon June Osborne was appointed Dean of Salisbury in February 2004.

The Revd Mark Bonney is currently Rector of the Parish of Great Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire and also Rural Dean. Having read music at Cambridge, he taught at Durham School before undergoing his theological training at Oxford. He has served as an assistant curate in Stockton-on-Tees, and as Chaplain & Precentor at St Albans Cathedral. Following these appointments he was vicar of Eaton Bray with Edlesborough and is currently the Rector of Great Berkhamsted – both parishes in the St Albans Diocese. Mark will be moving to Salisbury later this year with his wife Katy and their two daughters Hannah and Eleanor aged 11 and 8.

The role of the Canon Treasurer is to have oversight of the fabric and 'treasures' (as opposed to the financial aspects) of the Cathedral and the Close. He will be working closely with the Cathedral Architect (Michael Drury) and the Head of Buildings and Estate (Peter Edds).

This latest appointment brings back to full strength the team of canons for the first time since October 2002, when the previous Dean retired. Since then the Cathedral has seen the installation of a new Canon Chancellor (Edward Probert - April 2004) and Dean (June Osborne - May 2004). It is expected that the Canon Treasurer will be installed in September 2004.

The Revd Mark Bonney said on hearing of his appointment, "I am thrilled and excited to be coming to Salisbury. Cathedrals play a vital role in the mission of the Church. Buildings send out such powerful messages – and none more so than Salisbury Cathedral. It is a wonderful testament to the skill of its medieval builders, and remains today a highly visible sign of the strength of the faith which inspired it."

The Bishop of Salisbury, David Stancliffe, said, "I am hugely pleased that Mark will be joining the Salisbury team, and look forward enormously to a new and invigorating chapter in the life and ministry of the Cathedral'.

The Very Revd June Osborne, Dean of Salisbury, said, "We are looking forward to Mark joining the team here and bringing us up to full strength. His recent sabbatical on architecture, liturgy and sacred spaces will be immensely helpful as the new team reflects on and moves forward, developing our "Vision for the Future".
