Supporting Social Justice
Magna Carta has always been a challenge to injustice, with its promises that justice will be fair and based on the judgement of one’s equals. So when powerful people and systems are inclined to oppress the weak, Magna Carta is an important symbol of justice and liberty.
In our own time, there are still many victims of injustice and abusive rule. In 1980 Salisbury Cathedral installed its powerful Prisoners of Conscience window, as a reminder both of this fact and to show Jesus among them, suffering with them and offering hope of a better order.
Beneath this window is the Amnesty Candle, a sign of Salisbury Cathedral’s partnership with this international organisation which campaigns for justice.
